Bangladeshi held in Nadiad for robbery

Anand, Sep 30 (UNI) Two persons, including a Bangladeshi national, have been arrested from Nadiad in connection with two robberies.

Investigations have revealed that the Bangladeshi was staying in India illegally since 1993.

The two, arrested last Thursday, were produced before a Nadiad court today which remanded them in police custody till October 3.

The Bangladeshi national, Salim Khan, had allegedly robbed Rs 85,000 on September 25 from a Nadiad hotel where he was employed.

On the same day, he, along with Rajesh Krishna Prasad Sinha, had also committed a robbery in Vadadora.

Police said Salim Khan, during interrogation, has confessed that he is a Bangladeshi who had crossed over to the Indian side illegally during 1992-93.

Hailing from Fatehpur village in Hathazari district of Chatgav state in Bangladesh, Salim Khan first arrived at Kolkata and then found employement in a Howrah hotel, according to the police.

Subsequently, he shifted to Rajkot in Gujarat where also he worked in a hotel.

While in Rajkot, he married his neighbour's daughter and has a daughter aged four years, police said.

Russia suspends Georgia troop pull-out

TBILISI, Sep 30 (Reuters) Russia raised the stakes in a spying row with Georgia today by suspending a scheduled pull-out of its troops from the former Soviet state. ''The pull-out has been suspended,'' a Russian Defence Ministry spokesman said in Moscow, referring to a bilateral agreement on a phased withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgia, a relic of Soviet times. Govt clears ailing United Western Bank's merger with IDBI

Mumbai, Sep 30 (UNI) The Central Government today sanctioned the Scheme for the amalgamation of United Western Bank (UWB) with Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) effective from October 3. Accordingly, all the branches of (UWB) will function as branches of IDBI with effect from the aforementioned date, said a RBI release here today. Customers, including depositors of UWB, will be able to operate their accounts as customers of IDBI from that.....
