ULFA attack police party, one killed

Guwahati, Sep 22 (UNI) The ULFA today attacked a police party and killed a havildar virtually drawing the curtain of the month and half-long ceasefire with the security forces.

Official sources here said the ULFA militants shot dead the havildar, Ranjit Sonowal, when the police party had gone in search of a person in a case related to extortion bid on a tea estate executive at Napam under Borborua police station of Dibrugarh district.

Giving detail a senior police official said the ULFA had served extortion notice on a tea executive of the Goodricke tea company, Akramul Haque Chouhdury, Manager of the Sessa tea estate.

The extortion note demanding Rs Eight lakh was served through one Debo Dutta and when the police went to his house this morning after receiving the complaint, the ULFA militants hiding inside the house fired a volley of bullets, killing one on the spot.

The four-member ULFA team managed to escape and the police in Dirbruarh had launched a massive operation to nab the ultras.

Foundation stone laid for Kalasa Banduri drinking water project

Kanakumbi, Karnataka, Sep 22 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today laid the foundation stone for the long-pending Kalasa-Banduri drinking water project here, despite the Centre keeping the project in abeyance.
