Toll mounts to 43 in AP

Hyderabad, Sep 22 (UNI) The toll in rain-related incidents mounted to 43, even as major rivers, including Godavari were rising alarmingly following heavy rain in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions under the influence of low pressure.

Karimnagar, where over 3000 people were evacuated, accounted for 15 deaths, followed by Guntur(8), Warangal(8), Khammam(2) Adilabad (7), West Godavari (2), Medak one.

The state government has announced an exgratia of Rs 1.50 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, an official release said today.

As many as 1425 houses were fully damaged and 11,734 houses partially in the flood affected areas. Fourteen tribal habitations were cut off from the mainland. Eight country boats and one mechanized boat were pressed into service to evacuate the affected people from the tribal habitations, the release added.

Nineteen Afghan workers killed in ambush

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sep 22 (Reuters) Suspected Taliban ambushed a truck taking construction workers home in southern Afghanistan today, killing 19 of them. A spokesman for the Taliban, waging an intensified insurgency against the government and foreign forces across the south and east, claimed responsibility.
