TMMK demands apology, volunteers held to prevent picketing

Chennai, Sep 22 (UNI) Volunteers of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) were arrested when they tried to proceed in a procession to picket AIAMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's residence, in protest against here remarks against a senior IAS Officer Syed Munir Hoda.

The party demanded an apology from Ms Jayalalithaa for her remarks, General Secretary S Hyder Ali, who led the agitation, said in a statement.

The party recalling Ms Jayalalithaa's statement that Mr Munir Hoda had secretly helped Abdul Nassar Madhani to escape from prison and hence he was suspended, alleged that the charge was false.

It pointed out that an affidavit was filed in Madras High Court by Deputy Secretary, Home, Mr Kirubakaran after obtaining the consent of Additional Director General of Police, SIT DGP, Law Secretary, Public Prosecutor and Additional Government Pleader. This was a collective decision for which only an individual (Mr Hoda) was being targetted, the TMMK alleged.

The suspension order served on Mr Hoda by the previous government was revoked by Presidential orders. However, the then government did not comply , the party also alleged.

UN food envoy slams Europe over 'hunger refugees'

GENEVA, Sep 22 (Reuters) The United Nations investigator on the right to food slammed European countries today for turning back thousands of ''hunger refugees'' from Africa while undermining African farmers through unfair trade. Jean Ziegler, UN special rapporteur on the right to food, said the European Union's dumping of subsidised food in Africa was exacerbating the continent's hunger problems. This, he said, explained why many would-be migrants from West Africa have sought refuge in.....

MCL security staff seize 18 tonnes of coal

Sambalpur, Sep 22 (UNI) A dumper carrying 18 tonnes of coal with forged documents was today intercepted by the security staff of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) under Lakhanpur mines in Jharsuguda district. Later the security department handed over the truck to Belpahar police station. MCL sources said the dumper belonged to Sainik transport, a company working with the MCL. Nearly 100 tonnes of coal was transported on Friday.....

Rs 2.78 lakh looted from trading agency employees

Varanasi, Sep 22 (UNI) In a broad daylight incident three masked criminals looted Rs 2.78 lakh in cash from the employees of a trading agency at gun point in Sigra area here today. Police said here that the agency employees including Ranjit Bhattacharya, Rajiv Kapoor and Mahendra Sarkar (driver) were going to deposit Rs 2.78 lakh in cash at a bank in Rathyatra locality. When the car reached near the Sigra stadium, three masked criminals.....
