Sensex wilts 37 pts on profit booking, closes at 12,236.78

Mumbai, Sept 22 (UNI) The Bombay Stock Exchange after staying in the narrow range for the whole day plummeted 37.49 points to close at 12,236.78 as investors booked profit.

The S&P CNX Nifty too closed down 9 points or 0.25 per cent to finish at 3,544.05.

The sensex earlier opened 30 points in the red tracking the global weakness and stayed in the red for whole day. It oscillated to a high of 12,303 and a low 12,170 points, showing a swing of 133 points.

The breadth too in the broader market turned negative with 1607 declines and 898 advances, out of total 2575 scrips that traded the BSE counter, 70 scrips remained unchanged.

On September 20, 2006, FIIs were net buyers of stocks to the tune of Rs 236 crore (gross purchases worth Rs 1,377.10 crore and gross sales of Rs 1,141.10 crore) while domestic mutual funds were net sellers of stocks to the tune of Rs 269.32 crore (gross purchases worth Rs 320.33 crore and gross sales of Rs 589.65 crore).

Meanwhile, the crude oil price in the US market edged higher, with the Nymex light crude oil for November delivery rising 85 cents, to US Dollar 61.59 per barrel.

The domestic Oil and Gas sector, which is riding on the back of declining crude oil price, emerged the sole gainer amongst the BSE sectoral indices. All other sectors were down between 0.06 to 0.97 per cent, with Bankex closing down by 0.97 per cent.

Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Grasim Industries up by 1.97 per cent to Rs 2,518.75, Reliance Industries was up by 1.49 per cent to Rs 1,155.20, Gujarat Ambuja was up by 1.29 per cent to Rs 117.45, ACC was up by 1.20 per cent to Rs 980.20, Reliance Communications was up by 1.05 per cent to Rs 347.15, Bajaj Auto was up by 0.80 per cent to Rs 2,918.75, Bharti Airtel up by 0.79 per cent to Rs 469.25, Hindalco was up by 0.29 per cent to Rs 170.80 and Cipla was up by 0.08 per cent to Rs 260.15.

Besides the losers were Satyam down by 2.55 per cent to Rs 837.75, ITC down by 1.55 per cent to Rs 187.70, Tata Motors down by 1.50 per cent to Rs 835.45, ICICI was down by 1.36 per cent to Rs 655.05, Tata Steel down by 1.20 per cent to Rs 496.70, Reliance Energy down by 1.15 per cent to Rs 462.60, L&T down by 1.07 per cent to Rs 2,656.75, ONGC down by 1.04 per cent to Rs 1,184.45, Dr Reddy down by 1.02 per cent to Rs 748.75 and TCS down by 0.96 per cent to Rs 1,042.45.
