Pay hike for MLAs and MLCs

Patna, Sep 22 (UNI) Ministers including the chief minister, speaker and chairman of legislative assembly and council, leader of the opposition in both houses and MLAs and MLCs of Bihar will now get salaries and allowances at enhanced rate.

A decision to that effect was taken today in a meeting of the state cabinet which also gave its nod to a proposal for raising the rate of pensions for former members of the legislatures.

Cabinet coordination secretary A K Chauhan said that leaders of both houses of the state legislature, chief whips of different political parties and parliamentary secretaries would also figure in the list of beneficiaries.

In view of the increasing crimes against women, the cabinet approved raising a separate women battalion under state police.

Sarpanch ''returns'' unreceived President's award

Anand, Sep 22 (UNI) The Thamna village sarpanch has decided to ''return'' the President's award because although announced two years back, he was yet to receive it. Sarpanch, Chandrakant Patel, in a letter to Union Panchayat Raj Minister Mani Shankar Iyer today, lamented the award announced for him has still remained elusive. He would, therefore, like to ''return'' the award ''thankfully'' back and he has sent a copy of the letter to the President......

Police yet to make any arrest in Lalgarh case

Midnapore, Sep 22 (UNI) Police were yet to make a breakthrough in yesterday's blast at Lalgarh in the district in which two policemen were killed and 29 others, including seven journalists, were injured. West Bengal Director General of Police Anup Bhora, who reached here last night, went to the spot this morning and inspected the whole area strewn with bomb particles, pieces of wire and torn plastics. He also directed the combing operation.....

Passengers yet to be traced

Haldia, Sep 22 (UNI) About 37 passengers of a launch, which capsized in the rough sea near Patikhali island in the Bay of Bengal last night, were yet to be traced. Inspector General of Haldia Coast Guard Gurupdesh Singh said they rescued as many as 78 people yesterday from the turbulent river after a thorough search through their hovercraft. A Dornier aircraft brought from Calcutta Coast Guard conducted an aerial survey throughout.....
