Oriya writer Pratibha Roy to receive Amrita Keerti Award

New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Award-winning Oriya writer Partibha Roy has been selected for the Amrita Keerti Puraskar for her meritorious contributions to Indian literature.

The award, which comprises an amount of Rs 123,456, a hand-crafted idol of Goddess Saraswati Devi and a commendation certificate, has been set up by the Kerala-based Mata Amritanandmayi Math (MAM).

Ms Roy is to receive the award on September 27, the birthday of Mata Amritanandmayi Devi.

''Ms Roy is an award winning writer from Orissa who has captured reader's hearts through insighful narratives that often shed light on historical and mythological characters of India's collective consciousness,'' the MAM said in a statement.

Her most acliamed work is 'Yajnaseni' (1985), a novel that reconstructs the life of Drapudi, the enigamtic character of the great epic Mahabharat. It has been translated into seven languages so far and won for the authoress Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust's Moorti Devi Award and Sarala Award of Orissa in 1990.

''Roy's work is unsparing in its indictment of social evils and injustice, and she has often raised her voice against social injustice and corruption in society.'' The MAM set up the award in 2001 to ''seek out and honour those deserving personalities who have helped to promote a healthy society through the preservation of the ancient and enduring human values of Sanatana Dharma.'' The earlier recipients of the award are P Narayana Kurup, Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri, Dr. Shankar Abhayankar, Prof. Harihara Shastri, P Parameshwaran and Acharya Narendra Bhusan.
