Speaking after distributing free cycles to VIII standard girl students here, he said 270 girl students would benefit from this innovative scheme for studying professional courses from this year.

Dr Acharya said the Government had earmarked Rs 230 crore under the 'Bhagyalaxmi Baramma' scheme for depositing Rs 10,000 on the birth of a female child in a BPL family up to a ceiling of two children.

The Minister said that although the Rs 37 crore bicycle scheme was launched on August 15 last and introduced in six districts, it was delayed in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district due to the problem of transportation of cycles during monsoon season from Gujarat.
