Won't join govt that recognises Israel: Hamas

Gaza, Sept 22: The ruling Hamas movement will not join any Palestinian unity government that recognises Israel, a senior aide to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas said today.

The comments by Ahmed Youssef are a rebuff to President Mahmoud Abbas, who told the United Nations yesterday that any future coalition would recognise the Jewish state and renounce violence.

''I rule that out. The political thinking of Hamas prevents the idea that Hamas can be part of a government which puts the recognition of Israel on its political agenda,'' said Youssef, political adviser to Haniyeh.
