Female Karatekas put Arunachal on world sports map

Itanagar, Sep 22 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh has made its presence felt in the world sports map by winning of a bronze medal at the 5th Shito-Ryu Karate-Do World Championship held in Tokyo, by an Arunachalee girl, the first in the country.

The championship organised by World Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation, held from September 16 to 18, where Ms Lokam Yajik from Kurung Kumey district won a bronze medal in the 13-14 years category for kumite.

''This is a proud moment not only for India but for Arunachal Pradesh as Yajik is the first woman to have won a medal in a Shito-Ryu Karate-Do World Championship,'' commented state sports and youth affairs director P R Muzumdar, during a felicitation function organised this morning by Arunachal Karate Association (AKA).

Yajik, who is currently studying in class seven at the Govt.

Secondary School, Ganga, dreams of joining either the Army or Navy some day. She started practicing karate under the guidance of Sensei Langkung Marik, who is the Vice President of AKA and the General Secretary cum Technical Director of Arunachal Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Association (ASKA).

Earlier, Yajik won 6 golds in the State Level Karate-Do Championships and went on to add 3 more gold in the Shito-Ryu Karate-Do National Championship held at Bangalore in May 2006 last.

Narain's Formula Rolons will hog limelight in third leg

Chennai, Sep 22 (UNI) India's first F1 driver Narain Karthikayan's Team NK, driving the Formula Rolon cars with Chevrolet powered engine, will be hogging the limelight being seen in action for the first time on the Irungattukottai track in the third leg of the J K Tyre National Racing Championship here tomorrow and Sep 22. ICF regain state title

Neyveli, Sep 22 (UNI) ICF Chennai regained the title with the maximum of 20 points in the 16th Tamil Nadu State Team Chess Championships here today. ICF, who had last won the title in 2004, emerged on top with Syed Anwar Shazuli, K Gunasekaran, C Natarajan, T J Suresh Kumar and IM R Balasubramaniam, scoring 20 points out of a maximum of 28. In a dramatic and fiercely contested sixth and last round, joint leaders NLC.....

India to play one-day series at home against Windies, Lankans

Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) The Indian cricket team, as a build up to the 2007 World Cup in the Carribean Isles, would play two bilateral series' of four one-day matches each against West Indies and Sri Lanka at home in January-February next year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Niranjan Shah speaking to UNI over phone confirmed the two series' as the final tune-up for the squad under competitive match.....
