40 per cent decline in existence of species: WWF

Jalandhar, Sep 22 (UNI) Environmental activist and WWF-India Secretary General Ravi Singh today said the population of various species has recorded a decline of 40 per cent globally during past 35 years.

Speaking at a Nature Conservation Festival function organised by Vajra Army Wives Welfare Association(AWWA) in Jalanhdar Cantt here, Mr Singh said this concerning trend was pointed out in Living Planet Report Study done by scientists during the period of 1971 to 2005.

Expressing concern over ecological changes, environmental imbalance and over exploitation of natural resources, Mr Singh said the study also indicated that consumption level had registered over two fold increase since 1961.

Stressing up on the need of conservation of natural resources, he said people's behaviour should be changed and every one should respond to the need of environment conservation.

Mr Singh said the country should immediately ensure better water management and launching of campaign for increasing tree cover through massive forestation.

Every citizen should adopt at least one tree, he added.

Four-laning of Shimla-Kalka road up to Solan only, says Baalu

Shimla, Sep 22 (UNI) Announcing that the four-laning of the Shimla-Kalka part of the National Highway No 22 will now be restricted up to Solan town only, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu today said the decision was taken following discussions with Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. The Transport Ministry has accepted Mr Singh's request for four laning the road between Kalka and Solan only since the government does not.....

This followed representatives of the association holding talks with Chief Minister N Rangasamy yesterday in which the latter reportedly assured to consider their demands. Woman knocked down fatally

Puducherry, Sept 22 (UNI) A middle-aged woman was killed when a fire engine hit her at Pillaichavady near here today. According to police, a fire engine from Kalapet was sent to extinquish a blaze at Chinnakapet. When the vehicle reached Pillaichavady, the driver lost control and ran over Sivakami killing her on the spot. The vehicle then went into a roadside hut an came to a halt.
