Khajuraho, Sep 17: Demanding rail connectivity to this historic town, Madhya Pradesh Tourism, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Yashoda Raje Scindia has said the tourism potential of the state cannot be tapped without connectivity by air, rail and road.
Speaking to newspersons here, Mrs Scindia raised the issue of a rail link between Khajuraho and Mahoba and added she had taken up the matter with the Centre.
''Connectivity by air, rail and road plays an important role in developing a place as a tourist destination,'' she said. Madhya Pradesh has not been able to project itself as an important tourist destination as a number of places of historical, social and other picturesque places are not well-linked.
She said the development of tourism is directly related to infrastructure and called upon government agencies --both at the Centre and in the state-- to work for the upgradation of the facilities.
At Present the nearest rail connectivity to the town famous for erotic sculptures on its millennium-old temples in Jhansi, 175 km away.
This town is all set to witness a spurt in tourist arrivals as Indian resumed daily flights on the Delhi-Khajuraho-Varanasi route on September 15, and the state government announced its decision to implement several plans for the revival of tourism.
Due to lack of connectivity, the town has not been able to exploit its famous 11th century temples, built by the Chandela dynasty. A total of 85 temples were built, of which only 22 survive.
Throwing light on various measures taken for the promotion of tourism in Madhya Pradesh, Mrs Scindia said an agreement will be signed for linking all places of tourist interest in the state.
She said luxury buses will be introduced soon AT all the important routes of the state. The private sector has been invited to help improve tourism infrastructure. All grievances of the tourism industry in the state will be discussed at length and steps taken to improve the profile of Madhya Pradesh as a tourist destination, in general, and Khajuraho, in particular.
