Probe against DGP for son's admission under NRI quota

Indore, Sep 16 (UNI) A local court has directed the Economic Offences Wing of Madhya Pradesh police to probe into DGP Swaraj Puri reportedly presenting fake documents for his son's admission in a government engineering college here under NRI quota.

Additional Sessions Judge Akhilesh Panda yesterday ordered the inquiry by an officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police on a petition filed by Indore-resident Mahesh Garg on September 6.

The petition said Mr Puri's son, Shreyas Puri, was admitted to the Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science in 2001 under NRI quota.

To fulfill the NRI criteria, Mr Puri had reportedly mentioned ''Babulal Somani'' as his father and Shreyas's grandfather, while in the electoral rolls the DGP's father's name was shown as Vidya Sagar Puri.

Petitioner's counsel Manohar Dalal argued that neither Mr Puri nor his son had any relation with Mr Babulal Somani, a US-based NRI, and fake documents were prepared to take undue benefit. A California-resident, Mr Somani had paid 16,500 US dollars as tution fee and caution money during Shreyas Puri's stay in the institute, from where he passed out in 2006.

Besides Mr Puri, Shreyas Puri and Babulal Somani were made respondents.

The Judge, who fixed next hearing on September 27, directed the EOW to complete the inquiry within one month.

Meanwhile, the counsel today filed a petition in the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking a directive for CBI probe into the matter.
