Widowed labourer raped, nose chopped

Katni, MP, Sep 13 (UNI) A widowed labourer has been raped, her nose and fingers chopped off by her brother-in-law in this district's Jangalpuraini village, police said.

Accused Kripal Singh was arrested. The district administration assured free treatment to the victim and sent her to Jabalpur for plastic surgery. The woman's husband died five years back. She has a five-year-old son. Kripal's house was adjacent to hers and the crime was committed late on September 11.

A police complaint was lodged yesterday. The accused and other relatives objected to the victim working as labourer.

Governor concerned over price rise

Shillong, Sep 13 (UNI) Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob today instructed Chief Minister J.D.Rymbai to look into the exorbitant rise in prices of commodities in the state. In the letter, Mr Jacob also expressed his concern over the harassment and intimidation from various arbitrary toll collections by private parties, to whom the toll gates have been leased at several places along the National Highway. AISF protests fees hike

Guwahati, Sept 13 (UNI) The Asom unit of the All India Students' Federation (AISF) today held a demonstration against the rise in educational fees in the state in recent times. The AISF demanded that the government announce roll-back in school and college fees and 70 per cent concession in transportation charges for students. It also wanted regular payment of scholarship money to needy students and re-introduction of the scheme of monthly scholarship for students attaining.....

Chief Justice for Jharkhand High Court appointed

New Delhi, Sep 13: President A P J Abdul Kalam has appointed Justice Muthusamy Karpagavinayagam as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. Justice Muthuswamy was a Judge at the Madras High Court, an official statement here said.The President also appointed Judicial Officers P R Shivakumar and G Rajasuria, as Additional Judges of the Madras High Court, in the order of seniority, for two years.....
