UP govt to foot Bismillah Khan's hospital bill

Varanasi, Sep 13 (UNI) Keeping its promise of bearing the entire health expenditure of shehnai maestro Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan -- who passed away on August 21 last -- the Uttar Pradesh government will foot the hospital bill of Rs 83,791.

The bill presented by the Heritage Hospital on September four only includes consultancy fee and charges pertaining to medicines and consumables. The private hospital, however, has waived off an amount of Rs 41,130, including charges of ambulance, admission and registeration, nursing, deluxe rooms, ICU, monitor and ventilator.

''The hospital made it clear that it did not intend to charge even a single penny on the treatment of the Bharat Ratna, but after District Magistrate insisted that the government had already promised Khan Sahib's family of bearing the entire expenditure on the treatment of the music icon, we presented the bill to the authorities,'' Hospital Director Siddharth Rai said here today.

''The bill is being verified by Chief Medical Officer A P Singh and after the verification, it will be sent to Lucknow for further processing,'' District Magistrate Rajiv Agrawal said.

The 91-year-old shehnai legend, who was admitted to the private hospital on August 17 last following loss of appetite and liver dysfunctioning passed away early on August 21 owing to severe cardio respiratory arrest.

Situation tense as students threaten self immolation

Imphal, Sep 13 (UNI) Tension gripped Manipur today as three students, including a girl, threatened to immolate themselves over the denial of education owing to the teacher's stir. Three students, Longjam Kanta of Mayai Lambi College, Khunaijam Jibanlata and Yumnam Bijoy Singh of Liberal College have announced they would immolate themselves today. Widowed labourer raped, nose chopped

Katni, MP, Sep 13 (UNI) A widowed labourer has been raped, her nose and fingers chopped off by her brother-in-law in this district's Jangalpuraini village, police said. Accused Kripal Singh was arrested. The district administration assured free treatment to the victim and sent her to Jabalpur for plastic surgery. The woman's husband died five years back. She has a five-year-old son. Kripal's house was adjacent to hers and the crime was committed late on.....
