Situation tense as students threaten self immolation

Imphal, Sep 13 (UNI) Tension gripped Manipur today as three students, including a girl, threatened to immolate themselves over the denial of education owing to the teacher's stir.

Three students, Longjam Kanta of Mayai Lambi College, Khunaijam Jibanlata and Yumnam Bijoy Singh of Liberal College have announced they would immolate themselves today. However, so far there was no report of an immolation bid.

Police, CRPF and the Indian Reserve Battalion were stationed at strategic locations of the city, since early morning.

As the students hinted they launch their agitation near the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister's official residence at Imphal a large number of personnel were stationed at the two places.

The students of the aided colleges in Manipur were not having regular classes as the teachers were on a fast unto death demanding fulfillment of their demands.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had said the government cannot concede to the demands of the teachers.

The students said they had decided to take the ultimate step as they were denied education.

Army to take up developmental projects in Manipur

Imphal, Sep 13 (UNI) The army will initiate various developmental projects in the insurgency affected states like Manipur under 'Operation Sadbhavana'. Governor concerned over price rise

Shillong, Sep 13 (UNI) Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob today instructed Chief Minister J.D.Rymbai to look into the exorbitant rise in prices of commodities in the state. In the letter, Mr Jacob also expressed his concern over the harassment and intimidation from various arbitrary toll collections by private parties, to whom the toll gates have been leased at several places along the National Highway. AISF protests fees hike

Guwahati, Sept 13 (UNI) The Asom unit of the All India Students' Federation (AISF) today held a demonstration against the rise in educational fees in the state in recent times. The AISF demanded that the government announce roll-back in school and college fees and 70 per cent concession in transportation charges for students. It also wanted regular payment of scholarship money to needy students and re-introduction of the scheme of monthly scholarship for students attaining.....
