Situation tense as students threaten immolation

Imphal, Sep 13 (UNI) Tension gripped Manipur today as three students, including a girl, threatened to immolate themselves over the denial of education owing to teachers stir.

Three students, Longjam Kanta of Mayai Lambi College, Khunaijam Jibanlata and Yumnam Bijoy Singh of Liberal College have announced that they would immolate themselves today. However, so far there was no report of immolation bid.

Since early morning police, CRPF and Indian Reserve Battalion were stationed at strategic locations of the city.

As the students hinted that they launch their agitation near the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister's official residence at Imphal large number of personnel were stationed at the two places.

The students of the aided colleges in Manipur were not having regular classes as the teachers were on fast unto death demanding fulfillment of their demands.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had said that the government cannot concede to the demands of the teachers.

The students said they had decided to take the ultimate step as they were denied education.

Woman still unconscious after desire to commit sati in MP

Centre approves Rs 9.30 crore for tribal welfare

Agartala, Sep 13 (UNI) The Centre has approved Rs 9.30 crore for tribal welfare and improvement of socio-economic infrastructure in 62 villages in the state. This was informed by state Tribal Welfare Minister Jiten Chaudhury. Briefing mediaperssons the Minister said that the Central Tribal Welfare Ministry has approved Rs 9.30 crore for tribal welfare in the state.
