Shabana Azmi roped in for female foeticide awareness drive

Chandigarh, Sep 13 (UNI) The Punjab government has roped in noted actor-social activist Shabana Azmi for creating awareness among people, especially womenfolk, against female foeticide in the state.

Mrs Perneet Kaur, MP, and other social activists will also be involved in the campaign against gender bias following the report of dumping of foetuses at Patran in Patiala district recently, Health Minister Surinder Singla said at a press conference here yesterday.

The Chief Medical Officer has been shifted from there and the government is awaiting the report of an advisory committee appointed under the PNDT Act in this regard.

Mr Singla stressed that the Government's efforts to check this social crime needs to be supported by the people as well. There is a strong need to change people's mindset by educating them about gender equality through the awareness campaign, he added.
