Remo rocks in Brasilia ahead of IBSA Summit

Brasilia, Sep 13 (UNI) Remo Fernandes, India's top rock musician, had ministers, diplomats, businessmen and journalists rocking to his music at a concert here last night.

The event was ''India Evening'' organised here by the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) on the eve of the first India-Brazil- South Africa (IBSA) Summit.

Several businessmen from the three countries are attending the IBSA CEOs' summit organised alongside.

To help liven up things a bit, IBEF brought in Remo, who was born in Goa, a former Portuguese colony.

Remo, who performed for Presidents and Prime Ministers, also won the hearts of the Brazilians' in the audience with his Portuguese numbers and Goan music.

As he belted out popular Hindi numbers such as "O Meri Munni" and "Humma Humma" (from the film "Bombay"), many in the crowd, including Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, took to the floor.

Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan were among those who attended the event.

Remo was accompanied at the concert by The Microwave Papadums, his back-up band.

Nominations invited for Palkhivala Awards for Civil Liberties

New Delhi, Sep 13 (UNI) The Second 'Nani A Palkhivala Award for Civil Liberties' for preservation of civil liberties in India, has just been announced. The objective of the Award, instituted by the Nani A Palkhivala Memorial Trust, Mumbai, is to honour individuals and organisations, who have displayed extraordinary initiative in the preservation and defence of civil liberties in the country. The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a citation.....

Discharge from Mettur Dam stepped up

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 13 (UNI) The discharge of water from the Stanley reservoir at Mettur across river Cauvery was stepped up for irrigation, following demand from farmers of Delta districts. PWD sources said the discharge was increased to 15,000 cusecs from this morning from 8,000 cusecs. The inflow into the reservoir was 9,984 cusecs. The water level in the dam stood at 111.160 ft this morning, against its full capacity of 120 ft. From the Grand.....

Centre to setup software tech park in Mizoram

Aizawl, Sep 13: Information Technology Ministry in the Centre has chalked out a blue-print for setting up Software Technology Park of India (STPI) in Mizoram.
