Nominations invited for Palkhivala Awards for Civil Liberties

New Delhi, Sep 13 (UNI) The Second 'Nani A Palkhivala Award for Civil Liberties' for preservation of civil liberties in India, has just been announced.

The objective of the Award, instituted by the Nani A Palkhivala Memorial Trust, Mumbai, is to honour individuals and organisations, who have displayed extraordinary initiative in the preservation and defence of civil liberties in the country.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a citation in each category.

The last date for receipt of nominations is October 31. The awards will be given in January 2007, in Mumbai.

Former Supreme Court Chief Justice M N Venkatachaliah is the Chairman of the panel of Judges. The other members of the panel are Mr S P Bharucha, former Chief Justice of India, and Ms Anu R Aga, eminent industrialist.

Ponting fined full match fee for showing dissent

Dubai, Sep 12 (UNI) Australian captain Ricky Ponting was fined full match fee for showing dissent at an umpiring decision during the DLF Cup Tri-series one-dayer against the West Indies in Kuala Lumpur. Match Referee Chris Board found Ponting guilty of having breached Level 1.3 of ICC Code of Conduct relating to 'showing dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse' at the hearing after the match last night. Tottenham winger Lennon recovers from knee injury

LONDON, Sep 13 (Reuters) Tottenham Hotspur's England winger Aaron Lennon has recovered from a knee injury and will travel to Prague for this week's UEFA Cup first-round, first-leg tie against Slavia Prague, the club said. Spurs manager Martin Jol had told the Spurs Web site on Sunday that Lennon's injury could require surgery but the teenager trained with the squad yesterday and will have a late fitness test before Tottenham open their UEFA Cup.....
