Modi's entry into central politics would disintegrate NDA: Vaghela

Lucknow, Sep 13 (UNI) Blasting the BJP for its reported move to induct Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi into national politics, Union Textiles Minister and senior Congress leader Shankarsinh Vaghela today said the move would trigger disintegration of the NDA.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would have to be reorganised if Mr Modi was brought to the centrestage of the BJP politics, he told reporters here, thereby airing his views about the ''politics followed by Mr Modi.'' Making it amply clear that Modi's entry in the national politics would not be acceptable to NDA constituents, Mr Vaghela said the unity of the alliance would be in jeopardy if it was done.

The heavyweight Congress leader from Gujarat refrained from making any assessment of the performance of Narendra Modi-led government there. ''Floods are there and governments continue to do their work,'' (wahan baarh hai, aur sarkar kaam kar rahi hai...) was his crisp reply about the Gujarat government.

When his attention was drawn towards the BJP's plan to invite Mr Modi to UP in order to resurrect the sagging fortunes of the BJP in the state, the senior Congresman said the move was sure to boomerang.

Mr Vaghela was, however, defensive about the poor state of affairs in the Congress in UP saying the party was trying its best to improve its prospects in the next assembly polls.

In reply to a question that the state Congress leaders were often accused of playing 'B' team of the ruling Samajwadi Party, he said at times the ''politics of support'' compelled the leaders to adopt such postures. ''It happened to Communists at the Centre also where they were often described as 'B' team of the Congress and this is what coalition politics is all about,'' he pointed out.
