Memon family gets new lawyer Harshad Ponda

Mumbai, Sept 13: The Memon family, four of whose members were convicted by the designated TADA court yesterday, today got a new lawyer in form of senior counsel Harshad Ponda.

Earlier, noted defence advocate Majeed Memon was appearing on behalf of the Memon family since the time they returned and surrendered.

Mr Ponda is now the new captain of the ship for the Memon family.

Mr Memon was the prosecutor, all members -Essa, Yusuf, Rubina, Rahin and Suleiman and Abdul Razzak (now deceased), were granted bail.

Yesterday, Yusuf created a ruckus in court when he said he does not want any lawyer to defend him.

In a related development, members of the Memon family who were lodged in the prison were given the permission for home food.

Another accused, Ejaz Pathan was allowed to have mineral water. He recently underwent a cataract operation and also suffers from neurological problems.

SEC pulled up for not setting up Nyaya Panchayats

Allahabad, Sep 13 (UNI) The Allahabad High Court today pulled up State Election Commission (SEC) for being unable to set up Nyaya Panchayats in the state resulting in undesirable load on the other courts. Chief Justice Mr A N Ray and Mr Justice Ashok Bhushan issued a mandamus on a Public Interest Petition directing the SEC to file reply in four weeks.
