K'taka to hold Legislature session in Belgaum

Bangalore, Sep 13 (UNI) In a historic decision, the Karnataka Government today decided to hold the winter session of the State Legislature in Belgaum city in the last week of September.

In a post-Cabinet Press briefing here tonight, Home Minister M P Prakash said this was the first-ever session to be held outside Bangalore and it would last for four or five days.

The Assembly session would be held at Kumara Gandharva Auditorium, while the Council session would be at KLE Society Auditorium, he added.

The Minister said that among other things, the Office-of-Profit Bill, returned by Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi, would come up before the Belgaum session.

The decision of the Karnataka Government to hold the session in Belgaum comes in the wake of a report submitted by a high-level official committee, chaired by Parliamentary Affairs Secretary K L Bore Gowda, which was approved by the Cabinet. The Presiding Officers of the Legislative Assembly and Council have been taken into confidence and they have been asked to finalise the dates for the session after September 24.

Besides, in a border row spanning decades, Belgaum had been the bone of contention between the State and neighbouring Maharashtra.

It may be recalled that the State Government had decided to hold the second World Kannada literary meet at Belgaum to commemorate the 50th year of formation of the State.
