Kerala HC rejects bail plea of 5 SIMI activists

Kochi, Sep 13 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today declined to grant bail to five activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), arrested by the police on Independance Day this year from Panayikulam near Alwaye.

Rejecting their bail applications, Justice J M James observed that the material available on record was against the accused, indicating their involvement in activities against the existence and integrity of the country.

The Binanipuram police had arrested Shaduli Erattupetta and four others on August 15. Although police apprehended 18 persons who were attending a meeting at Panayikulam, a case was registered against five persons only for indulging in unlawful activities and for entering into a criminal conspiracy.

Opposing the bail plea, the state government said that the activists were holding the meeting to spread their activities to the coastal areas of the state.
