Former MP died

Pune, Sep 13 (UNI) Former Member of Parliament and State Minister Shankarrao Bajirao Patil died here after a prolonged illness.

He was 82 and is survived by a daughter.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh arrived here this afternoon to pay homage to the departed soul. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said, ''We have lost the architect of Indapur. He will be remembered for his contributions in raising questions for people displaced and affected by dams, the sugar industry, Mathadi Kamgar''.

A Congressman, Patil was associated with a number of educational institutions, and cooperative societies.

Pune guardian minister Ajit Pawar and Marketting and Parliamentary Affairs minister Harshawardhan Patil, his close relative also paid condolences.

CPI(M) rejects Basu's request to step down

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) Ending speculations over Mr Jyoti Basu retiring from politics, the CPI (M) today summarily rejected the veteran leader's request to step down and decided to retain him in the Politbureau at least for two more years. '' We have decided that he should continue so that his experience and advice benefits us. Our next party Congress to be held in 2008 will decide what to do,'' CPI (M) General Secretary.....

CPI(M) to move for SEZ Act amendment

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) The CPI(M) Polit Bureau today decided to garner support from other political parties and press the UPA Government for an amendment to the Special Economic Zone Act to arrest largescale eviction of farmers. " The Polit Bureau has decided to take up this issue so that changes can be introduced in the SEZ Act and rules and procedures. India must support Venezuela in UNSC election: CPI(M)
