Discharge from Mettur Dam stepped up

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 13 (UNI) The discharge of water from the Stanley reservoir at Mettur across river Cauvery was stepped up for irrigation, following demand from farmers of Delta districts.

PWD sources said the discharge was increased to 15,000 cusecs from this morning from 8,000 cusecs. The inflow into the reservoir was 9,984 cusecs.

The water level in the dam stood at 111.160 ft this morning, against its full capacity of 120 ft.

From the Grand Anaicut in Thanjavur District, 3,428 cusecs of water was let out into Vennar, 510 cusecs into river Cauvery, 3,514 cusecs into Grand Anaicut canal and 802 cusecs into Coleroon river for irrigation, the sources added.

Tottenham winger Lennon recovers from knee injury

LONDON, Sep 13 (Reuters) Tottenham Hotspur's England winger Aaron Lennon has recovered from a knee injury and will travel to Prague for this week's UEFA Cup first-round, first-leg tie against Slavia Prague, the club said. Spurs manager Martin Jol had told the Spurs Web site on Sunday that Lennon's injury could require surgery but the teenager trained with the squad yesterday and will have a late fitness test before Tottenham open their UEFA Cup.....

Encroachment: a major problem for Asom heritage

Guwahati, Sep 13:  Encroachment, both private and government, near the historic sites is posing to be the major problem for preservation of archaeological sites in Asom.Department of Archaeology Director H N Dutta told UNI yesterday, ''As land near the archaeological sites are deemed to be government property, many government insitutions and buildings had already been set up.
