CPI(M) to move for SEZ Act amendment

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) The CPI(M) Polit Bureau today decided to garner support from other political parties and press the UPA Government for an amendment to the Special Economic Zone Act to arrest largescale eviction of farmers.

" The Polit Bureau has decided to take up this issue so that changes can be introduced in the SEZ Act and rules and procedures.

We have also decided to seek cooperation of other political parties on this issue and take it up with the Government, " CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters after the two-day meeting of the party's apex body.

Mr Karat said the party discussed the issue in depth and prepared a detailed note suggesting an alternative guideline being followed by the West Bengal Government stipulating at least 50 per cent of the land allotted for SEZs for industry, 25 per cent for industry-related infrastructure and the rest for other purposes.

The present system allows entrepreneurs to go for real estate business over 75 per cent of the plot leaving the rest for industry and processing.

" Though the Group of Ministers(GoM) on industry has recently suggested that 35 per cent of SEZ land should be utilised for industry, the Polit Bureau has rejected it and wants the Centre to follow the procedure emulated by the West Bengal Government, " Mr Karat said.
