Cellular phone company showcases ICC Champions trophy

Chennai, Sep 13 (UNI) The cricket afficionados of this megapolis today had a chance to have a glimpse of the ICC Champions trophy to be held in India next month.

The Trophy was showcased by leading cellular service provider Hutch at the Spencer's Plaza in the city.

Valued at 20,000 dollars, the 8 kg trophy is 18 inches high and is 5.5 inches at its widest point.

It is crafted in solid silver and consists of a silver gilt cricket ball engraved with the world map. The ball is mounted on a trefoil of sterling silver curved panels that taper down to a lacquered wooden plinth. The front panel is engraved with the tournament title and logo.

Hutch CEO, Chenani and Tamil Nadu, Kumar Ramanathan, speaking on the occasion, said the showcasing of the trophy was part of the company's overall effort to make cricketing action more accessible to the customers and the cricketing fans in the city.

Bhupathi-Ancic pair storms to 2nd round of China Open

Beijing, Sep 13 (UNI) Tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi teamed up with Mario Ancic of Croatia to tame the Hyung-Taik Lee-Yeu-Tzou Wang pair in straight sets to storm into the second round of the 475,000 dollar China Open here. The Bhupathi-Ancic pair never faced any problem against their unheralded opponents from Korea and Chinese Taipei and cantered to a 6-3, 6-3 win in the first round match. In the second round, they take on third seeded.....

Anther injury scare for England, Hoggard sustains side strain

London, Sep 13 (UNI) Matthew Hoggard gave England yet another injury scare before Ashes series after the seamer pulled out of Yorkshire's match against Nottinghamshire with a side strain. Yorkshire physiotherapist Scott McAllister said later that Hoggard had undergone an ultra-sound scan which was clear, but he would have an MRI scan tomorrow to see if there was a small strain. Scott did not believe the injury was serious. Hoggard, who took 16 wickets.....

EU regrets delay in opening borders to newcomers

BRUSSELS, Sep 13 (Reuters) The European Commission expressed regret today for a postponement in the opening of its internal borders to new member states, saying it will seek to minimise the delay. The European Union had originally planned to allow the 10 mostly ex-communist states which joined the bloc two years ago into its border-free ''Schengen'' area in October 2007. But technical and legal problems in building a new central police database look set.....
