Bomb scare in Malegaon following unclaimed packet

Malegaon, Sep 13: A bomb scare gripped the town following the discovery of an unclaimed packet in Mohammadiya market centre this afternoon.

Police have cordoned off the area suspecting the packet might contain explosives.

The predominantly Muslim town was hit by four bomb blasts on September 9 which claimed 31 lives.

A sniffer dog squad, bomb disposal experts besides senior officers of police and anti-terrorist squad have reached the site.

Fire brigade personnel have been stationed outside the market centre.

Earlier on Monday, a similar unclaimed packet found at Nashik had indeed turned out to be an improvised explosive device (IED). But a timely alert sounded by an eight-year-old boy averted a major tragedy in a thickly-populated area of the city.

Abandoned in front of a hospital at Mirajkar ground on Nagji-Wadala road on Mumbai-Agra highway, the IED with a timer and concealed in a plastic bag was, however, diffused by police bomb disposal squad.
