Annan presses Syria, Lebanon to agree on ties

United Nations, Sep 13: UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan pressed the leaders of Syria and Lebanon today to quickly launch negotiations to establish diplomatic ties between the two West Asian neighbours.

Annan told the UN Security Council he expected Damascus and Beirut to agree to ''the early initiation'' of efforts to establish full diplomatic relations after both Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora told him they were ready to meet with each other ''at any time'' to start the process.

Rise in travellers with Chikungunya virus reported

LONDON, Sep 13 (Reuters) Cases of the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus in people returning to Britain from islands in the Indian Ocean have risen dramatically, public health experts said today. More than 115 travellers have shown symptoms of the illness, which causes a high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle and joint pain, so far this year, compared to an average of about six cases annually. India, Brazil to continue G-4 initiative for UNSC seats

Brasilia, Sep 13 (UNI) India and Brazil have decided to continue working closely together in the G-4 framework to realise their aspirations for permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council. The G-4 initiate on UN reforms also includes Germany and Japan. In a joint communique issued after their summit meeting here yesterday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said both countries attached high priority to reforming the UN.....
