Govt. committed to welfare of working class: PM

New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said his government was committed to the welfare of the working class and claimed that it had reversed the previous trend of speedy closure and disinvestment of PSUs.

At a meeting here with trade union leaders, he said ever since the UPA came to power, it had been working hard to build a society which was based on the principles of equity, welfare and social justice.

"Our government is a caring government. We are committed to the welare of the working clas which is the backbone of our industrial sector," the Prime Minister said.

Dr Singh said the common minimum programme, on which the policies of the UPA Government were based, had specific mention of labour issues. "It commits us to the welfare and well-being of all workers. It commits us to fully protect the interests of workers and their families, and gives importance to consultations with trade unions. It also commits us to the welfare of the public sector," he added.

He said the UPA had been trying to build a society which was based on the principles of equity, welfare and social justice. "We have brought several legislators into place which will have a beneficial impact on the working sectors of our population, both men and women, in cities and in villages.

Among them, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was the most significant as it provided income security to the most vulnerable poor sections of society in rural ares.

"We are also working hard to see how we can provide social security to some degree to workers in the unorganised sector, Dr Singh added.

Yechury terms mainstream media as "bourgeois"

Jaya flays Speaker on breach of privilege issue

Chennai, Aug 19 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today took exception to Assembly Speaker R Avudaiyappan referring to the privileges committee, a breach of privilege issued against her, for criticising his style of conducting the proceedings in the House.
