Narayana Murthy vouches for US education pattern

Bangalore, Aug 18: IT titan N R Narayana Murthy today gave a call for changing the methods of learning in India by focusing on problem solving, solutions and relating it to the real world, like in the US.

Talking to UNI here, the Infosys Chairman and Chief Mentor, who was associated with several colleges in the US, said the pattern of education there is entirely different compared to the methods of learning in India. It is based on problem solving and solution-oriented. ''We have to bring about that change...It will be a big step forward.'' Admitting that the industry would face a dearth of skilled manpower, he said ''it's alright as long as we are willing to quickly address the problem if not today, four years later.'' However, it is better to start today rather than later, he added.

Complimenting the role of Union and State Governments in the growth of IT sector, Mr Murthy said the focus on higher education, for which the foundation was laid by late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and States giving prominence to the growth of engineering colleges in the private sector had played an important role in making available the required talent.

Reiterating his plea to start more English primary and secondary schools, he stressed the need to ensure that engineering and computer science education be made more relevant to the needs of the industry.
