Vice-President Greets People on Independence day, Janmashtami

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has greeted the people on the occasion of Independence day and Janmashtami.

''We should rededicate ourselves to realise the goal of making India a developed country free from the scourge of poverty, illiteracy and under-development,'' he said in an Independence Day-eve message.

Separately, he also greeted people on Janmashtami, saying it ''reminds us of the timeless relevance of Sri Krishna's birth and enjoins upon us to follow His immortal teachings, which have the power to rid us from turbulence and moral decay''.

Members raise issues of urgent public importance

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) Mr Ramji Lal Suman (SP) today raised in the Lok Sabha the issue of menace of Naxalism which has affected 160 districts in the country. Raising the issue during the matters of urgent public importance in the House, Mr Suman said the Centre should immediately take steps to control the spread of Naxalism. Cantonments to become deemed municipalities

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) Cantonments are now proposed to be given the status of deemed municipalities to discharge the functions of a muncipality,Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha. Moving for consideration the Cantonment Bill 2006, he said there were 62 cantonments in the country out of which 56 were set up during the British period and 6 in the independent India. Previously cantonments used to serve as temporary residence of troops but.....
