Tezpur VC's anticipatory bail petition rejected

Guwahati, Aug 14 (UNI) Gauhati High Court today rejected an anticipatory bail appeal of Tezpur University Vice-Chancellor (VC) P C Deka, wanted in a case of alleged financial irregularities.

Chief Justice B Sudarsan Reddy rejected the bail petition of Dr Deka, who had been absconding since an FIR was lodged against him by Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, for emblazzment of funds.

The VC, in his capacity as the Dean of the AAU between 1999 to 2004, had allegedly opened a bank account in the name of the university and deposited money allotted by ONGC for a research project in it, without informing the concerned authority.

The scam had first come into light in November last year and a police complaint was lodged two weeks ago. Dr Deka had left for Guwahati following the FIR and his whereabouts were not known.

He had moved the court, seeking anticipatory bail.

Dr Deka now faces arrest if he fails to face investigation.
