Punjab CM greets people on Independence Day

Chandigarh, Aug 14 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today extended his warm greetings to all Punjabis living in the country and abroad on the eve of 60th Independence Day.

In a message, Capt Singh said that Punjabis had not only played a major role in the freedom struggle but also made outstanding contribution for maintaining the hard earned freedom and ushering an era of overall development in the country.

''Independence Day though is an occasion of celebrations and elation yet, it is also a moment for introspection and setting new goals for faster development,'' he said.

Mr Singh called upon the people to take a pledge on this solemn day to rededicate ourselves to make Punjab as a front runner state on the national map. He asked the people to imbibe the spirit of nationalism and patriotism which was the essence of a strong nation.

He also appealed to the people to resolve to evolve a harmonious society through mutual trust, understanding and goodwill.

SW monsoon vigorous in MP and Saurashtra

Meghalaya beefs up security for I-Day

Shillong, Aug 14 (UNI) Security measures have been tightened in Meghalaya following various militant outfits' call to boycott the Independence Day celebrations in the region. A high alert has been sounded in Garo Hills, in view of intelligence reports that the banned United Liberation Front of Asom plan to disrupt the I-Day celebration. Four live bombs recover from a girls' school

Siliguri, Aug 14 (UNI) Panick struck in KLO dominated Jalpaiguri district on eve of Independence Day celebration following unearthing of four live bombs from a girls' school that led to beefing up security system in all three internationl borders including Bangladesh, senior official sources said. An anonymous call to Phalakhata police station informed that four powerful bombs had entered the district and might be detonated on or before August 15. Police immediately launched combing operation.....
