PM, MPs miss President's Address to Nation

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues and most Members of Parliament today missed the all-important Address to the Nation by the President on the eve of Independence Day.

As President APJ Abdul Kalam's address was being telecast on the Doordarshan national channel, parliamentarians were occupied with the inaugural ceremony of the new Parliament Museum, opened by Dr Kalam himself.

The President's recorded Independence Day-eve speech and the inaugural ceremony of the Parliament Museum were telecast simultaneously on two state-run channels.

Both the President's address and the museum function where Dr Kalam spoke began at 1900 hrs. The museum function was telecast live by the new Lok Sabha channel.

The inauguration of the museum was attended by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and several cabinet ministers and MPs.

600 action teams in place for I-day

Hyderabad, Aug 14 (UNI) About 600 action teams have been pressed into service throughout the state to thwart any attempt by Maoists or others to disrupt the peace during Independence Day tomorrow. The alert comes in the wake of reports that Maoists would attempt to avenge the killing of Committee Secretary Madhav in an encounter in the Nallamala forests recently. Police in the districts, who are coordinating with the action teams, have been closely monitoring.....

Flood situation alarming in AP

Hyderabad, Aug 14 (UNI) The flood situation in the Krishna basin continues to be grim tonight as the river and its tributaries are in spate in the wake of heavy discharge from the upper riparian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. A flood alert was sounded as the Tungabhadra was flowing above the danger mark in the temple town of Mantralayam, the abode of Saint Raghavendra. The discharge was stepped upto 2.05 lakh cusecs following heavy inflows.....

Congress demands dismissal of Bihar Energy Minister

Patna, Aug 14 (UNI) The State Congress today demanded sacking of Bihar's Energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, who has been declared 'absconder' by a local court. A delegation under chief spokesman of state Congress, Prem Chandra Mishra called on Bihar Governor R S Gavai and urged him to remove the minister from the Bihar Cabinet. Mr Mishra also demanded sacking of Sugar Cane Minister Nitish Mishra as he held an office of profit.....
