Fourth Kannada International Literary Meet in New York next month

Bangalore, Aug 14 (UNI) The fourth Kannada International Literary Meet will be held in New York from September three, Association of Kannada Kootas in America (AKKA) founder President Amarnath Gowda said today.

Speaking at a function here, Mr Gowda said the Meet would organise a business leaders conclave of Kannada speaking businessmen living in the United States with Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy meeting the businessmen and industrialists in that nation.

The Chief Minister would also sign an MoU with the New York city Mayor Michael R Bloomberg that would help the US city based businessmen to explore business opportunities in Karnataka.

Mr Gowda said AKKA would also arrange interactions with leaders of Mangolia and the States of Karnataka.

On the occasion AKKA donated USD 70,000 to 13 schools in Karnataka which had rendered services in educating children belonging to underprivileged section. The funds were donated by a number of Kannada speaking people in the US through AKKA Charitable Foundation, which first began as a cultural organisation and then started raising funds for social service in the state.

The Literary Meet would attended by eminent artists from various fields from the state of Karnataka. A business leaders delegation would also accompany the Chief Minister during the meet, he added Karnataka State Principal Secretary for Tourism, Information and Publicity I V Vittala Murthy and Bangalore Doordarshan Kendra Director Mahesh Joshi were present during the occasion.

W House North Lebanon security needed to stop arms

WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) As a fragile truce began taking hold in southern Lebanon, the White House said today that security was probably needed in northern Lebanon to stop arms shipments to Hizbollah. More than 1,100 families flee Sudan floods

KHARTOUM, Aug 14 (Reuters) Heavy floods have forced more than 1,100 families to flee in Sudan, while the river Nile has risen to a serious level, an official said today. Awad Widatalla Hussein, head of the civil defence authority, said only one person was officially confirmed dead, although Sudanese papers carried numbers of at least eight killed in Khartoum alone. The Nile in Khartoum was at 16.40 metres yesterday, above its height on the same.....
