City of Lakes deluged; denizens dead or missing

Bhopal, Aug 14 (UNI) Fourteen persons were killed while more than 12 went missing due to overnight downpours in the Madhya Pradesh capital and surrounding districts of Raisen, Vidisha and Hoshangabad While the financial loss was estimated to be heavy, road traffic, train movement and flight schedules were also affected.

Twelve fatalities were reported from here alone as the record 30 cm rain shattered a 70-year record. Inundation of low-lying settlements affected about two lakh persons and thousands sought refuge in relief camps. Soldiers were briefly called in to aid the civil administration.

At an emergency meeting here, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviewed the situation in a few districts. After assessing damage, a comprehensive memorandum would be dispatched to the Centre for financial aid.

Directives were issued for providing immediate relief to affected families, arranging for food and precautionary medical facilities. Collectors were told to monitor the situation in their districts.

The gathering was informed that the season's overall death toll in the state stood at 47 while 13 persons were missing, more than 4,000 houses sustained damage and 78 relief camps were set up.

As this city's main potable water source Upper Lake attained full-tank level of 166.80 ft, all sluice gates were opened at Bhadbhada dam. The Kolar reservoir also attained full-tank level.

Industry Minister Babulal Gaur, who represents the local Govindpura constituency, visited the affected areas along with senior officials. Ex gratia of Rs 50,000 each was doled out to the deceased's families.
