New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) At least 12 people were killed and nine others missing as heavy rains played havoc in the Madhya Pradesh capital and Army was deployed briefly to assist the civil administration in rescue and relief operation today while the flood situation in the Krishna basin in Andhra Pradesh continued to be grim.

A flood alert was sounded in Andhra Pradesh's temple town of Mantralayam as the level in the Tungabhadra rose above the danger mark. The situation in the Krishna basin continued to be grim following heavy rains in the upper riparian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Army had to be deployed in low lying areas near the railway station in Madhya Pradesh to help the administration in relief and rescue works.

Train and road traffic remained disrupted due to landslides and waterlogging of the track between Bhopal and Bina stations. Many trains were running six to seven hours behind schedule.

Due to heavy discharge of rain water from Srisailam to Nagarjunasagar reservoir, the flood situation along river Krishna continued to be alarming for the tenth day today.

One person was killed, taking the toll to five, in a house collapse in Allagi-B village in Gulbarga district of Karnataka even as the water level of river Bhima, which was in spate, started receding.

More than 3400 people have been sheltered in relief camps in the district, officials said. As many as 27 villages were under water following the floods.

Kolkata witnessed moderate drizzle in the morning recording three mm of rainfall. Shadows of depression over the neighbouring state Orissa turned weak as it has moved towards Madhya Pradesh.

The national capital also experienced heavy showers bringing much needed relief to Delhiites from the warm and humid weather of the past few days.
