Tension in Ichalkaranji over alleged desecration of 'Nandi' idol

Kolhapur, July 18 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the powerloom town of Ichalkaranji here following the alleged desecration of an idol of 'Nandi' (the sacred bull of Lord Shiva) at a temple here.

Police said some people today found the idol of 'Nandi' at the Mahadev temple, situated on the bank of Panchaganga river in Ichalkaranji, allegedly desecrated.

As the news spread in the industrial town, the businessmen closed down their work while shopkeepers downed their shutters, to condemn the incident.

The activists of some Hindu organisations also assembled and arranged a 'maha-arti' at the Mahadev temple and condemned the incident, police said.

Meanwhile, there were reports of some state transport buses being pelted with stones in the Sahakarnagar area.

However, police said the situation was tense, but totally under control, and added that adequate police force has been deployed around the temple premises and various other sensitive points in the town.

Besides, pro-Hindu activists in Kolhapur also condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of culprits.

Indians slip in latest Golf Rankings

Mulayam's home town to get women sports college

Lucknow, July 18 (UNI) Saifai, home town of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, has been gifted with the first women sports college of the state. The decision to set-up the exclusive college at Saifai was taken in a state cabinet meeting chaired by the CM here today. This will be the third sports college in UP after Guru Govind Singh Sports Collage, Lucknow and Veer Bahadur Singh Sports College, Gorakhpur. The cabinet also approved.....

Edwards ready for the Indian challenge at home

London, July 18 (UNI) Confident of avenging the 1-4 ODI series loss against India last year, England captain Charlotte Edwards said her team would like to settle the score by toppling Mithali Raj and co as the second best team in the women's cricket rankings in the home series next month. England drew the one-off Test that they played against the hosts last year and managed to win only the opening game of the ODI series.....
