Social group comes to help of poor school-going children

Kolhapur, July 18 (UNI) A local social group 'Dhananjay' alias 'Munna Mahadik Yuva Shakti' has decided to distribute school material to about 10,000 poor and needy children in Kolhapur.

Group leader Dhananjay Mahadik told mediapersons here that they conducted a survey after visiting various schools in Kolhapur to find out the needs of the children. ''The programme is undertaken with the sole motive of encouraging the poor and needy to get education,'' he said.

About 40,000 exercise books and 2,500 school uniforms will be distributed to the selected students, he said and added that their group has adopted 250 poor school-going children to bear their educational expenses.

''The programme undertaken by the group is the first of its kind in the Western Maharashtra,'' he claimed.

BJP leaders taken into custody

Hyderabad, Jul 18 (UNI) Prominent BJP leaders, including former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya were taken into custody today, when they tried to enter the Civil Supplies Commissioner's office at Somajiguda here in protest against faulty rationing system. Goa's engineers forum demands ouster of Francisco Pacheco

Panaji, July 18 (UNI) More than 400 engineers of the Goa electricity department today launched a ''pen-down strike'' against the assault on a junior engineer allegedly by Agriculture Minister Francisco Xavier Pacheco at the latter's house in South Goa recently. Engineers' forum leader Bharat Niglye told UNI that they had signed the attendence rolls but did not take work as part of their agitation. The strike would continue till the government did not initiate suitable action.....
