Saha, Anita storm into finals in Chipalkatti badminton competition

Pune, July 18 (UNI) Unseeded Ratikanta Saha of West Bengal came back from behind to pip seventh seed P Vinay Kumar Reddy of Andhra Pradesh 17-21, 21-14, 21-11 today and set up a title clash against R M V Guru Sai Dutt of Andhra Pradesh in the junior boys singles of the Kirloskar Brothers sponsored Sushant Chipalkatti memorial All India Junior Badminton championship being played at the Western India Enterprise complex here.

In the other lacklustre semi-final, the unseeded Hyderabad lad, Dutt swept aside sixth seeded Samruddha Rathod of Maharashtra in straight games 21-14, 21-10 under 30 minutes.

The corresponding junior girls saw the third seed Anita Ohlan of railways made the short shrift of second seeded rival G M Nishchita of Karnataka in straight games 21-18, 21-14 and will lock horns with Sonal More of Maharashtra in the finals slated for tomorrow. In the other tame semi-final unseeded More whipped yet another unseeded Monish Vinayak of Karnataka with a degree of comfort 21-11, 21-14.

Fourth seeded Praful Joshi of Madhya Pradesh shocked the top seed statemate Sameer Verma in a pulsating tussle 21-18, 22-20 to clash against B Mahendra of Andhra Pradesh in the mini boys singles finals.

In the other semi-final, Mahendra had to wage a tough battle before downing C R Jyoti of Karnataka in a tight match 19-21 21-16, 21-17.

The sub-junior boys singles also witnessed an upset, as fourth seeded Pratik Patel beat the top seeded Abhimanyu Singh of Madhya Pradesh in straight games 21-19, 21-17. Patel will clash against Saurabh Verma of Madhya Pradesh. Verma, second seeded in the tournament, disposed off N Prashant of Andhra Pradesh comfortably at 21-16, 21-16.

Sub-Junior Boys Singles: Pratik Patel (Guj) beat Abhimanyu Singh (MP) 21-19, 21-17 Saurabh Verma (MP) beat N Prashant (AP) 21-16, 21-16.

Sub-Junior Girls Singles: Pradniya Gadre (Mah) beat I R D Saravani (AP) 21-13,21-10.

N Siki Reddy (AP) beat Vinita Ghate (Mah) 21-10,21-18.

Junior Boys Singles: R M V Guru Sai Dutt (AP) beat Samruddha Rathod (Mah) 21-14,21-10 Ratikanta Saha (WB) beat P Vinay Kumar Reddy (AP) 17-21,21-14,21-11.

Iraq, UN postpone launch of economic programme

BAGHDAD, July 18 (Reuters) The Iraqi government and United Nations have postponed the high-level launch of a major economic recovery programme for several weeks, officials said today. Israel pounds Lebanon, Hizbollah rockets hit Haifa

BEIRUT, July 18 (Reuters) Israeli warplanes today battered Lebanon, killing 31 people, and more Hizbollah rockets hit northern Israel, killing one, with no sign that diplomacy would halt the week-old conflict any time soon. Civilians on both sides were angry about the bombardment that has cost 235 lives in Lebanon and 13 in Israel, but Israeli and Hizbollah leaders showed no willingness to halt the fighting or heed proposals for a new U.N.-backed stabilisation force......
