Punjab rehab packages to 9074 families of 84 riots victim

Chandigarh, July 18 (UNI) The Punjab government had disbursed rehabilitation grants of Rs two lakh each to the 9074 riot-affected families of 1984 till date, while 2671 other cases were still pending.

These grants were being provided under rehabilitation package announced by the Government of India to compensate the victims of 1984 riots, R C Nayyar, Secretary, Revenue&Rehabilitation and Disaster Management said today.

A total of 15254 such claims were received from the Deputy Commissioners throughout the state. Out of which 11745 claims were settled and 2038 claims were rejected while 1079 claims were still under consideration.

He assured that the remaining cases of disbursement pending with Deputy Commissioners of Amritsar, Ludhiana and Mohali besides other, would be disposed of very shortly.

Mr Nayyar further informed that the state government had also provided 269 jobs and 2471 houses to the 1984 riot victims. Out of which maximum 86 jobs and 919 houses was provided in Jalandhar and Mohali districts respectively and 206 such families was allotted plots in various districts.

Similarly, commercial properties and marriage grants have also been provided to 999 and 140 riot affected families in the state.

Maximum 201 plots and 56 marriage grants in Ludhiana and 430 commercial properties in Amritsar have been provided, he added.

He further revealed that the state government was also providing subsistence allowance at the rate of Rs 2500 per month to the 300 riot affected widows.

Uma demands inquiry into politician's nexus with drug mafia

Bhopal, July 18 (UNI) Bharatiya Jan Shakti President Uma Bharti today demanded an inquiry into the politicians' alleged links with drug mafia, terrorists and Naxalites.
