PM amenable to Defence Univ at Moti Bagh Palace: Capt

Patiala, July 18 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has agreed, in principle, to set up a Defence University at Old Moti Bagh Palace, currently occupied by Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said here today.

Talking to mediapersons after presiding over a function of rural development, he said he hoped defence minister Pranab Mukherjee will soon call a meeting on the issue.

The Chief Minister was reacting to the statement of Union Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar that there were no plans to shift NSNIS from Patiala.

He said, he had approached Dr Singh, who had given consent to establish Defence University at the Old Moti Bagh Palace.

Capt Singh further said he also met the chiefs of defence forces who also gave their consent. He said he had urged the defence minister to call the joint meeting of sports minister and others to finalise the issue.

BJP MLA's brother robbed of diamond jewellery worth Rs one crore

Rajkot, July 18 (UNI) The driver of a private travel agency stole diamond jewellery worth Rs one crore belonging to the brother of BJP legislator from Surat today. The driver, Dilip Ahir, allegedly decamped with the booty along with the 'Tata Sumo' in which Vasant Gajera, a diamond merchant of Surat, was returning to Surat after holding an exhibition-cum-sale of jewellery there. Vasant Gajera, elder brother MLA Dhirubhai Gajera, owns a diamond jewellery shop 'Sygnus'.....

Former president beaten by Registrar's goons

New Delhi, July 18 (UNI) A former student leader of the Jamia Millia Islamia was today beaten up by some alleged goons of the University Registrar while protesting against the alleged malpractices being carried out at the official's behest. HC Chief Justice retires

Mumbai, July 18 (UNI) Bombay High Court Chief Justice Kshitij Vyas retired today. He had been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on February 25. Earlier, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Gujarat High Court before his elevation as the Chief Justice of Bombay. Born at village Bhalod in Bharuch district, he obtained a degree in law from M S University, Baroda. He, then, enrolled as an advocate.....
