MP Assembly pays homage to Mumbai blast victims

Bhopal, July 18 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly today paid homage to the victims of Mumbai serial blasts -- in which at least 176 died and about 700 were injured -- and observed two-minute silence to mourn the deaths.

Condemning the blasts, the House stressed the need for dealing with terrorists with an iron hand.

The state assembly also condoled the deaths of at least 30 tribals in one of the deadliest Naxalite-attacks at Erabor village in Chhattisgarh's Dantewara district yesterday.

The legislative assembly also condoled the deaths of senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, former Union Ministers Bansilal and A B A Gani Khan Choudhary, former legislators Amolak Chand Chhajed, Ramchandra Choudhary, Tumanlal and Mayadevi Salwar.

As soon as the proceedings began, Speaker Ishwardas Rohani mentioned the names of the deceased and said 176 people died in the Mumbai blasts on July 11.

Former Chief Minister Babulal Gaur, Leader of the Opposition in Assembly Jamuna Devi and floor leaders of other political leaders paid tributes to the deceased.

Later, the House was adjourned for 10 minutes.

The monsoon session of the assembly -- celebrating its golden jubilee year -- got underway yesterday with the address by President A P J Abdul Kalam.

Goa's engineers forum demands ouster of Francisco Pacheco

Panaji, July 18 (UNI) More than 400 engineers of the Goa electricity department today launched a ''pen-down strike'' against the assault on a junior engineer allegedly by Agriculture Minister Francisco Xavier Pacheco at the latter's house in South Goa recently. Engineers' forum leader Bharat Niglye told UNI that they had signed the attendence rolls but did not take work as part of their agitation. The strike would continue till the government did not initiate suitable action.....

Tension in Ichalkaranji over alleged desecration of 'Nandi' idol

Kolhapur, July 18 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the powerloom town of Ichalkaranji here following the alleged desecration of an idol of 'Nandi' (the sacred bull of Lord Shiva) at a temple here. Police said some people today found the idol of 'Nandi' at the Mahadev temple, situated on the bank of Panchaganga river in Ichalkaranji, allegedly desecrated. As the news spread in the industrial town, the businessmen closed down their work while shopkeepers.....

BOI poised for 25% growth,to open more offices abroad

Kolkata, Jul 18 (UNI) Public sector Bank of India, poised for a 25 per cent growth to Rs 200,000 crores, recently took over a Tanzania based bank as its subsidiary besides, deciding to open at least four more foreign offices this year. Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of a FICCI-sponsored banking conclave here today, BOI chairman and managing director M. Balachandran said they had also financed 120 million dollars to a Chennai based oil.....
