MDMK secretary joins ruling DMK

Chennai, July 18: Organising secretary of Marumalarchi DMK and former MLA Pota P S Manian has resigned from the party and joined the ruling DMK.

Mr Manian, who was also the MDMK Madurai Moffusil District Presidium chairman, detained under POTA and lodged at Vellore prison along with party General Secretary Vaiko for nearly 19 months, met the DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi yesterday at the Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters here and joined the DMK party, a party release said today.

Several other functionaries, including women wing cadres of AIADMK and MDMK party units of Thousand Lights, Triplicane, T.Nagar and other areas of the city resigned from their parties and joined the ruling DMK, the release added.

Mumbai blasts: PCB concerned about players' safety

Alex Kountouris to succeed Errol Alcott as physio for the Aussies

Sydney, July 18 (UNI) Alex Kountouris will succeed Errol Alcott as the physiotherapist of the Australian cricket team following the latter's resignation from the post -- after 22 years -- to take up a similar job with a rugby team. Kountouris, who was with the Sri Lankan team from 1996-2003, has worked for the past three years under Alcott, who has held the job since 1984. Kountouris has also stood in for Alcott during the tours.....

Car bomb in Iraq's Kufa kills 15 - police

KUFA, Iraq, July 18 (Reuters) A car bomb today hit a group of labourers near a Shi'ite mosque in the southern Iraqi city of Kufa, killing 15 and wounding 21, police said. Hospital sources said they had received 17 bodies after the blast hit a crowded market 50-100 metres from the mosque in Kufa, 160 km south of Baghdad. Policemen who arrived in the scene were pelted with rocks by angry supporters of a radical Shi'ite.....
