Chennai, July 18: The city-based International Calvari Mission Trust (ICMT) has proposed to construct five lakh houses each at a cost of Rs 1.75 lakh in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala in the next five years for the benefit of the homeless.
ICMT Trustee S Ramanathan told UNI here last night that of the proposed five lakh houses, 1.5 lakh houses were earmarked for Tamil Nadu.
Stating that the project had already commenced three months ago, he said 450 houses have been constructed in different parts of Tamil Nadu so far and 350 more houses were under construction at Yelegiri hills. These houses would be handed over to 350 tribals there free of cost before the end of this year.
In connection with the 37th birthday celeberation of ICMT founder-president Rev J Job Saravanan, welfare assistance worth Rs 20 lakh was distributed to the poor at a function held in suburban Vanagaram here yesterday.
Mr Job Saravanan, later laid the foundation stone for the construction of 1,500 houses at Katchipedu village near Rajiv Gandhi memorial at Sriperumbudur, he added.
