Fake notes seized, three arrested

Chennai, Jul 18: Police have arrested three persons, including a village Panchayat President on the charge of circulating fake currencies of Rs 100 denomination at suburban Uthukkottai.

According to police, one Sundar went to a petrol bunk yesterday.

After fillng the petrol in the two-wheeler, he gave Rs 100 to a bunk employee. Suspecting the currency to be fake, they informed the police, who rushed there and arrested Sundar.

Based on his information, police arrested Nagaraj, President of Perandur village panchayat and his associate Manohar.

Police seized counterfeit currency to the tune of Rs 18,000 from them.

MDMK secretary joins ruling DMK

Chennai, July 18: Organising secretary of Marumalarchi DMK and former MLA Pota P S Manian has resigned from the party and joined the ruling DMK.Mr Manian, who was also the MDMK Madurai Moffusil District Presidium chairman, detained under POTA and lodged at Vellore prison along with party General Secretary Vaiko for nearly 19 months, met the DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi yesterday at the Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters here and joined the DMK party, a party release.....

Israel refuses to rule out massive Lebanon invasion

JERUSALEM, July 18: Israel's army today refused to rule out a massive ground invasion of Lebanon as part of an offensive to force Hizbollah guerrillas to free two Israeli soldiers and stop firing rockets at the Jewish state.''The army has many possibilities for action,'' Moshe Kaplinsky, Israel's deputy army chief, told Israel Radio when asked if the military would rule out a massive land incursion.''At this stage we do not think we have to activate massive ground forces.....

PANGANDARAN, Indonesia, July 18: At least 230 people were killed after a tsunami smashed into fishing villages and resorts on Indonesia's Java island, following a strong undersea earthquake, rescue officials today said.No warnings were reported despite efforts around the region to establish early warning systems after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000 people, including 170,000 in Indonesia.But many residents and tourists recognised the signs and fled to higher ground as the sea receded before huge waves.....
