Doyen of Yakshagana Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat is dead

Mangalore, July 18 (UNI) Renowned Yakshagana artist Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat, died today in a private hospital in Kasargod town of Kerala after a brief illness.

He was 89. He is survived by four sons.

Mr Bhat had served in various Yakshagana troupes in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, including the famous Shreekshetra Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Yakshagana Sabha (SDMYS). His role as Bappa Beary in an episode called Bappanadu Kshetra Mahatme had earned him wide acclaim. He had also written several books on Yakshagana and other cultural topics. Mr Bhat was the recipient of several National and State awards.

The funeral held in the evening in Kasargod was attended by a large number of his fans and Yakshagana lovers.

UPSRTC employees call off their stir

Lucknow, July 18 (UNI) Agitating State Roadways Corporation (UPSRTC) employees today called off their strike unconditionally after ''positive assurance'' from the government. The employees have earlier announced to go on indefinite strike from midnight tonight. Siddaramaiah regrets having associated with Deve Gowda

US calls on Iran, Syria to press Hizbollah on Lebanon

WASHINGTON, July 18 (Reuters) The United States, maintaining its position that Israel has a right to defend itself, today called for Iran and Syria to exert their influence to halt rocket fire by militant group Hizbollah. Hizbollah started the conflict and Syria and Iran, the group's backers, should be using their influence to halt it, said White House spokesman Tony Snow, referring to the militant group's attacks on Israel from Lebanon.
