Chikungunya outbreak: Bijapur declared high risk zone

Bijapur, Karnataka, July 18: A team of doctors have declared the district as high risk zone following alarming rise in the number of Chikungunya cases reported in the area.

Chikungunya was a relatively rare form of viral fever caused by an alphavirus that was spread by mosquito bites.

The team, which conducted a survey in the district, found that the disease was spread in the district by 'Eygpt mosquito.' Of the 20 colonies it surveyed, several people were found suffering from the disease. As many as 50,000 cases had so far been reported in the district.

In their report, the doctors said the cause for the outbreak of the disease was due to storage of drinking water for more than 15 days.

Bhopal, July 18: The Madhya Pradesh government is considering to seek financial assistance from an American NGO ''Safari Club International'' for the protection of Barahsinga (swamp deer) found in Kanha National Park, Forest Minister Himmat Kothari told the Assembly today.The population of Barahsinga, a protected animal, at the Kanha National Park is about 324 at present, he told Mr Gajraj Singh Sikarwar in a written reply. Woman mowed down by Metro train

New Delhi, July 18 (UNI) A woman was killed at Chandni Chowk Metro Station this morning when she 'jumped' onto the track and was hit by a train. Thirty-year-old Paramjeet Kaur went to the rear end of the underground station, where passengers normally do not go, and presumably jumped before a train at about 0920 hrs, Metro police said.
